I spent three days finishing this book when I first read it years ago, and I happened to listen to Oasis` Sunday Morning Call repeatedly while reading it. For me, this ritual was sort of like the scene in Almost Famous where the boy lit the candle when he listened to the Who`s album Tommy.
Personally, I think Haruki Murakami is a very good introduction for you to Japanese literature. I never know how to explain why I adore him. All I know is that he is a very careful observer. He puts things, which we take for granted, into amazing theories and leads us readers to appreciate more about what is happening around us.
I feel my heart is being hollowed out whenever reading his books; afterwards, something new will refill the empty spot. Then I feel like I have changed simply by reading his words. There are rarely happy endings in his books, or should I say those happy endings we normally want them to be. His stories can be surreal, making you feel like stepping in those adventures, too. However, unlike adventures themselves, those feelings that the characters in books experience are real because we feel those pains, those feelings everyday. It is dramatic as the stories go, but somehow when you finish reading, you find yourself in a calm place again, or maybe even a better one.
I will share my favourite quote with you when you finish it. Hope you enjoy it! Happy birthday, Luke.
